The removal of fat from one part of the body to place it in another part of the body is most frequently done to replace volume that has been lost in the area targeted for fat transplant. Volume is commonly loss as a result of the aging process (i.e. atrophy or droopiness in the face, breasts or buttocks), but may also be lost from traumatic injuries (car accidents, falls, sports injuries, gunshot wounds). Traumatic injuries requiring fat transfer may also include surgical traumas, as with depressed or sunken areas after breast biopsy of benign breast lumps or benign breast tumors or after removal of external fixation devices used to repair leg fractures or arm fractures.
